Bert, a resident of San Jose, was born on July 23, 1946, and died on Saturday, December 4, 2010, surrounded by his loving family.

He married Nicci (Kelso) Bandy and they enjoyed 43 wonderful years together. Bert attended McLane High School in Fresno , Ca. graduating in 1964. From there he attended Fresno City College. He had a lifelong passion for baseball, starring as a pitcher for McLane High and Fresno City College.

His baseball career was interrupted by a stint in the US Army from 1966 to 1968, during which he fought in Vietnam.

He then returned to baseball upon his honorable discharge from the Army. He went on to pitch successfully for several years in the Philadelphia Phillies minor league organization.

Bert had a lifelong love of all sports and played baseball into his 50's and basketball into his 60's. After the birth of his first son, Bert began his 40 year career in retail sales, working until he was diagnosed with lung cancer in February of this year. Bert fought bravely until losing the battle to this dreadful disease. He will be deeply missed by his loving family and friends. We love you Dad!

He was preceded in death by his father Vernon. They were blessed with three sons, Brett, Mike, and Rich; daughter-in-law Angelique; and three grandchildren, Darren, Ryan, and Matthew. He is also survived by his mother Marcelle; his brother Vernon Jr.; sister-in-law Francis; and nephews Dan and Rod of Fresno , Ca.

A Viewing will be held at Darling Fischer Campbell Memorial Chapel on Friday, December 10, 2010, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Darling Fischer Campbell Memorial Chapel, 231 E. Campbell Avenue in Campbell, Ca. on Friday, December 10, 2010, at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lung Cancer Foundation of America; or the American Cancer Society.
