Birth: Sep. 8, 1841
Aspley Guise
Central Bedfordshire Unitary Authority
Bedfordshire, England
Death: Mar. 16, 1894

Waikato-Hauhau Maori War Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Captain in the Foretop, Royal Navy. At Tauranga, New Zealand, April 29, 1864, Captain Mitchell was a member of a storming party of 150 sailors and marines from the HMS Harrier ordered to attack a fortified position. When the enemy's fire had killed most of the storming party and wounded the commanding officer, the team was ordered to retreat. Even being wounded himself, Captain Mitchell went forward and brought back the commanding officer out to safety. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
