Professional Champion Boxer. He held the world middleweight championship for 7 years, during which he made a then division record of 14 defenses. His record of 14 title defenses stood for 25 years until Bernard Hopkins beat Carl Daniels in 2002 to retain the Middleweight Championship for the 15th time. In 1990, he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. His glamourous and violent life finished when he was accused of killing his wife in 1989, and then sentencied for 11 years in jail. He died in a car crash during a weekend furlough.
