Death of One of the Oldest Residents
Lewis T Covell, 88 died at his home on North Main street Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Mr Covell was born Dec 1 1823 at Rochester, N.Y. and was the son of Lewis W and Dorothy Trowbridge Covell. When only a few months old his father died and he came to live with an uncle, Rufus Trowbridge of Buckland, who brought him up as a son.
Mr Covell came to Shelburne Falls in 1857 and worked for several years in the cutlery as foreman in the wheel room. In 1867 he went into the grocery business with Joshua Sears, under the firm name of Sears & Covell. Later on he bought out Mr Sears and took his son, Rufus Covell into partnership and Covell & Son conducted the business for a good many years. He subsequently formed the Covell Aqueduct Co., of which he was manager and distributor for 27 years, giving up active service only this spring.
Mr Covell had been remarkably active for a man of his advanced age and kept about his business until only a few months ago. His strenuous efforts to keep the frozen water pipes open during the past winter overtaxed his strength and he had since gradually failed to the end. Mr Covell was highly esteemed as a business man and a good citizen. He was a member of the Congregational Church and serviced as deacon for over 20 years. He was also chairman of the board of trustees for the church fund and had held other important offices. Mr Covell was twice married, his first wife being Lucy Williams of Buckland. For his second wife he marred Mrs Mary Griswold Burrows of Bernardston, who survives him. Of the first marriage there were three children all of who are living, Mrs ----- Hillman of Grand Junction, Iowa, Rufus Covell of Shelburne Falls and Mrs Elmer H Copeland of Northampton. He leaves also a half brother James Nash of Springfield and a half sister Mrs Mary Baker of Adams. Besides his three children, there are nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held from the house to-morrow at 2 o'clock p.m. The interment will be in the family lot in Arms cemetery. It is expected that Rev. J A Hawley who is absent on his vacation, will return to officiate. [published Saturday, August 24, 1912 Gazette & Courier, Greenfield, paged 6]
