COLQUITT - Former Lt. Gov. Peter Zack Geer, who prosecuted one of Georgia's most notorious murder cases, died Sunday.
Geer, 68, died at the Miller County Hospital of cancer.
Geer, who had worked as an attorney in Albany until recently was lieutenant governor under Democratic Gov. Carl Sanders from 1963-67.
Geer was appointed special prosecutor to try the four men accused in the execution-style slaying of six Alday family members. Then Gov. Jimmy Carter called the 1973 murders "the most heinous in Georgia history."
The death sentences Geer won were overturned on appeal 11 years later because of enormous pre-trial publicity. the cases were retried and the defendants were convicted. Maryland prison escapees were returning from Florida with another man when they stopped at a trailer in rural southwest Georgia. They were burglarizing the mobile home when they were surprised by the Aldays, who were returned to their Donalsonville home from working in the fields.
The bullet-riddled bodies of Ned Alday, 62; his brother Aubrey, 58; and Ned's three sons, Jerry, 35, Jimmy, 25, and Chester, 32, were found in the trailer by a relative. The body of Jerry's wife, Mary, was discovered nearby. She had been raped repeatedly and shot.
In 1966, Geer, as president pro tem of the Georgia Senate, oversaw the election of Democratic Gov. Lester Maddox by the state legislature. Neither Maddox nor his opponent, Republican Bo Callaway, had a majority of votes, leaving the vote to the legislature, which voted Maddox into office 182 votes to 66.
Names of Geer's survivors were not immediately available. Services were scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Colquitt United Methodist Church, with burial in Colquitt City Cemetery.
