Peterson, Leo Clarence, 82, passed away Oct. 29, 2011. He was born June 2, 1929 in Lakeside, AZ to Joseph Arley Peterson and Coral Shumway. Leo was raised in Lakeside and Snowflake.
When he was nineteen, he served a two-year religious mission in the eastern states. He then served in the Army from 1952 to 1954, where he was stationed in Austria. Leo married Norma Jean Williams on July 1, 1955 in the Mesa AZ Temple. He taught agriculture and welding classes at Westwood High School until 1986, when he retired after teaching 30 years. He was known affectionately by his students as "Pete."
During this time Leo trained the Meats Judging Teams in the FFA program, and he enjoyed helping them win numerous competitions. Leo served his church as Bishop of the Mesa 13th Ward from 1979 to 1984. Above everything else, he was a devoted and loving husband and father.
He is survived by his wife Jean, his children Mark (Jerri Ann), Verle (Vicki), Leilene Tieman (Paul), Dana Haws (Edwin), Le Borman (Rick), Darren, 23 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 2 brothers.
A viewing will be held on Friday, Nov. 4, 2011 from 6-8 PM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1155 E. Ray Rd. in Gilbert, AZ.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011 at 10:00 a.m., with a viewing one hour prior, at the same building.
Burial will be at the Lakeside, AZ Cemetery at 4:00 p.m. Arrangements by Bunker's Garden Chapel of Mesa.
