Antoine Racine
Birth: Jan. 26, 1822
Death: Jul. 17, 1893

Religious Leader. First bishop of Sherbrooke. A native of La Jeune-Lorette (Québec), he made his studies at the seminary in Québec, became professor and was ordained on September 12, 1844. He was then named vicar in La Malbaie until 1848, and was the first priest at Saint-Eusèbe of Stanford, in 1851, he was transfered to Saint-Joseph of Beauce and, from 1853 to 1874, he was the pastor of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste parish in the city of Québec. On August 28, 1874, Pope Pius IX set up the diocese of Sherbrooke and on September 1, he named Father Racine as its first bishop. On October 18, Bishop Taschereau conferred the dedication to him, and his establishment took place two days after. His tasks were huge: creation of a seminary and hospitals, separation of the co-educational schools, erection of new parishes, foundation of charities. After twenty years, he had formed 86 priests, had created 54 parishes, had raised to 60 000 souls the number of his flock. Three times, he made the voyage from Rome, where Pope Leo XIII honoured him with the titles of Roman count and assistant to the papal throne.  (bio by: Guy Gagnon)
