The subject of this sketch grew to manhood assisting with the work on a farm and enduring the hardships of pioneer life. Daniel acquired sufficient knowledge to teach school in the winter months while farming in the summer. With the exception of one year spent in California and other western states, he lived in the neighborhood all his life. Daniel and his wife, Martha Belle Sharp were married nearly 50 years and the parents of 12 children. Daniel departed this life at the age of 78 years at the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis following an accident in which he was struck by a truck.

Daniel Engle and John York Die in Hospital

ICY STREETS PLAY PART

Injuries in automobile accidents proved fatal to two pedestrians Thursday; several were injured in accidents due to icy streets and three motorists were placed
under arrest by police.

Daniel Engle, age seventy-eight, retired farmer, of Carlos, who was struck by a truck Thursday forenoon, and John M. York, age seventy-seven, 1885 North New Jersey Street, retired railroad engineer, who was injured in an accident February 7, died at hospitals.

Mr. Engle died at the City Hospital as a result of a fractured skull received when he was struck by a truck driven by Albert Summers, colored, 1612 Columbia Avenue, as he stepped from the curb at New York Street and Colorado Avenue. Mr. Engle was visiting his daughter, Mrs. E. P. Morrison, 4203 East New York Street, and had planned to return to his home in Carlos soon. He had just left the house to take a short walk. He was a native of Randolph County and a farmer until he retired seven years ago, making his home in Carlos with his daughter, Mrs. Charles Dallenger and Mrs. Morrison are six children: Robert and Walter Engle, of Richmond; Charles of Carlos; Mrs. William Hodson and Mrs. Grace Adamson, of Carlos, and Mrs. Joseph Morrison, of Economy. The body was removed to Carlos Friday afternoon for burial later.
