James R. Whalen, 69, of Davenport, formerly of Clinton, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by family Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, following a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis with hypertension. Burial in Davenport Memorial Park, where military honors will be presented by American Legion Post #26, Davenport.
Jim was born and raised in Clinton, to Vincent and Magdalyn Whalen. He graduated from St. Mary's High School of Clinton. Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in Vietnam. He later moved to Davenport, where he met his wife of 46 years. Carol Hennings and James Whalen were united in marriage Nov. 21, 1964. He was employed by United Parcel Service from which he retired after 25 years of service. He was a member of Local Teamsters Union 710, Chicago, and American Legion Post #26, Davenport. Jim enjoyed woodworking, going to grandkids sporting events, fishing, local dirt track racing, NASCAR, spending time with his family and friends, making family heirlooms, and also was an avid Chicago Bears and Cubs fan.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Whalen; son, Douglas (Angella) Whalen; daughter, Donna (Joseph) Van Hecke; mother-in-law, Catherine Hennings; and six grandchildren, Tessa, DJ, Corralle, and Crystal Whalen, Destiny and Gunnar Van Hecke, all of Davenport. He was preceded in death by daughter, Deborah Ann Whalen, sister, Darlene Daurelle formerly of Clinton, his parents Vincent and Magdalyn Whalen, and father-in-law, Fred Hennings.
