From: Portrait and Biographical Records of St Clair Co, Illinois:

"Daniel Stookey seems to have been one of a family of pioneers. His eldest brother, Jacob, remained on the home place in Hardy Co VA (now West Virginia)to which his father
removed from Maryland. Abraham was the next eldest, and
removed to Ross Co Ohio where he lived and died. Simon settled in Bedford Co PA, and Samuel went to Canton, OH.

"Daniel...did not want to be left behinds so he decided to try the west but as he did not wish to go alone, he married in Virginia before starting. Shortly after this he removed to Ohio, settling hear Chillicothe, and remained two years when, hearing of the rich and fertile lands in St Clair Co Illinois, in 1802 he started across country and finally made a settlement on what is familiarly known as the "Old Stookey place". This became the home of his remaining years, he dying there in 1835 at the age of sixty-five years. His wife survived him fourteen years, dying in 1849, aged seventy-five years."
