A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Mahan served as a Union officer during the Civil War. He is perhaps best known as the author of the 1890 book "The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660-1783," which advocated a navy of overwhelming force and is widely considered the most influential work on naval strategy ever written. Mahan would also serve as president of the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island from 1886 to 1889 and again from 1892 to 1893. He retired as rear admiral in 1896, but returned to the navy during the Spanish-American War to serve on the Naval War board.
