She was the 6th of six daughters and the 9th of eleven children, born to Rev. James Hearst Pressly and Julia Mabel [née Lowry] Pressly. Elizabeth was named for her great-great-grandmother, Elizabeth Hearst, a great-grand aunt of William Randolph Hearst.

Elizabeth was graduated from Erskine College and for several years was a teacher at Avery Sherrill school in Statesville. On January 10th 1945, she married James Wallace Moses, son of George Ruben Moses and Mary Pryde [née Wallace] Moses, of Deland, Florida.
