"Darlene Rose (Haag) Cayler was born August 22, 1926, in Ledyard, IA, daughter of Cyril and Catherine (Boever) Haag. She attended Ledyard Consolidated School. She worked in Minneapolis until her marriage to Ralph Cayler on September 3, 1949 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ledyard. They then lived in Bancroft during their entire married lives.

Darlene was a 50 year charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She served as a Regent for four years.

She was Editor of the Bancroft Register beginning in 1965. From 1971 to 1981, she and her husband, Ralph owned the Bancroft Register. She continued writing, and on May 10, 1995 she started the column 'This & That' until her recent illness. It made her day when people would say 'yes' to being featured in her column. She liked writing about all people, especially the young, and was proud to see her column displayed with other memorabilia at graduation receptions.

Darlene loved her community, and was always very active. She loved singing in the St. John Choir. She also loved volunteering in the St. John School hot lunch program and playing the wash tub with the Kitchen Klatter Band for many years. She and 'Tilliy' the mascot enjoyed many meals with the Red Hat Ladies. She and her good friend, Ann Degen, were golfing buddies in golf league for many years. She previously was a 4-H leader, and bowled in a bowling league. She enjoyed water aerobics and working out at the Health Club. She loved yard work mowing her lawn until early last summer. She loved people, family and friends and was always up to attending ballgames, eating out, movies - actually anywhere she was invited. She and Ralph traveled extensively early in their marriage, and again after Ralph retired. She was always on the go. She was much loved and will be sorely missed by many.

Darlene died of lung cancer early Monday, October 24th, 2011 at the home of her daughter, Corinne McCullough.

Surviving are her children; Corinne McCullough and friend Gary Jahnke of Dubuque, and Craig Cayler of Tucson, AZ; her grandchildren Kevin McCullough of Brooklyn, New York and Karen and husband Nic Hoeger and great grandchild to be born in April, Eagle, CO. She is also survived by six brothers, Claude Haag of Ames, Melbourne (Ann) Haag of Ledyard, Vernon Haag of Ledyard, Merlyn Haag of Ozark, MO, Frank (Margaret) Haag of Elmore, MN., and Lyle of Chicago, IL; and sisters Pearl Irmiter of Vinton, Sister Blanche Marie Haag of Dubuque, Isabelle (Harold) Hatten of Pinellas Park, FL, Mary Ann (Bernard) Reilly of Ledyard, and Rita (Edward) Schmalen of West Bend; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ralph in 1998; brother Art; sisters Colette Schneider and Ruth Arcand; brothers-in-law Bill Schneider, Dr. Willard Irmiter, Fred Arcand, and Art Putze; sisters-in-law Berniece Haag and Florence Haag, and nephews Dick Schneider, Lyle Arcand and Gary Hatten; and one niece, Eileen Stillman."
