Birth: 1837
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Sep. 24, 1881
Beaver County
Pennsylvania, USA

James married Sarah Jane Irwin about 1870. They had three children, Frank Daniel, Irwin, and Mary Ellen.

James was a carpenter, employed by the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie railroad.

He was killed between Beaver and New Brighton by a steam locomotive carrying the press corp ahead of the train bearing the body of President James A. Garfield. James and a crew of 9 men were working on a wooden trestle bridge when the unscheduled train arrived. According to articles published about the incident in the local paper, a Coroner's Inquest was held. The P&LE Railroad was cited for running an unscheduled train at an excessive speed of more than 60 mph.
