James L. Aikins, 71, Green Bay, died Wednesday, March 11, 2009. He was born March 22, 1937 in Kansas City, Mo. and was adopted by the late Lowell M. and Mildred M. Aikins on June 17, 1937 in Kansas City.

James attended Tank and Norwood grade schools, Franklin Jr. School and was a 1955 graduate of Green Bay West High School. He also attended the Green Bay Vocational School and one semester at Dana College, Blair, Neb. He joined the United States Army Reserve in September of 1955 and was on active reserve status until 1961. James served six months active duty from October, 1955 to April, 1956 and was honorably discharged as Sgt E-5.

The most important decision Jim made in his life was when he accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal savior on Sunday, Nov. 2, 1986 at First Assembly of God Church in Green Bay at the production of Heavens Gates and Hells Fire. James was a member of Highland Crest Baptist Church, where he helped in the Vacation Bible School and was a weekly volunteer at Providence Christian Academy. James and his parents moved to Arizona in 1957 and lived there until 1964. After the death of his father in 1963, he and his mother moved back to Green Bay in 1964.

He was employed in the street sanitation and sewer department for the City of Green Bay, beginning his employment in 1964 and retiring after 31 years of employment.

Survivors include one step-sister and step-brother-in-law, Janet and Marshall Schaefer, Elk Mound, Wis.; one step-brother and step-sister-in-law, Peter and Robey Junkins, Sommerville, S.C.; 15 step-nieces and nephews; many cousins and special friends, including Jim and Janis Robertson and family; and many special little friends to whom he was their "Uncle" Jim.

He was preceded in death by many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, at Highland Crest Baptist Church, 1830 South Military, where the funeral service will take place at 5 p.m. with the Rev. Jim Downs officiating. Interment will be at Liberty Pole Cemetery, Liberty Pole, Wis.
