Elected as a US Representative from 1851 to 1853, Johnson was appointed the Provisional Governor of Georgia by President Andrew Johnson at the end of the Civil War. As governor, he rescinded the Act of Secession, and adopted a new state constitution. He later ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate and US Presidency.
