5th Governor of Indiana. Born in Clarke County, Virginia, he moved to Brookville, Indiana, in 1816, and worked in the land speculation business, as well as the wool carding business. In 1817, he entered the 7th Regiment of the Indiana militia and served as a Colonel until 1820. After his military serve, he was sheriff of Franklin County, (1820-24), was a member to the Indiana House of Representatives and served as the Receiver of Public Moneys of the Indianapolis Land Office, (1824 to 1829). In 1831, he was elected the 5th Governor of Indiana and served until 1837. While in office, he passed the Mammoth Internal Improvement Act in 1836, which caused a great deal of celebration in the state and the bill was considered his greatest achievement. After leaving office he became a member of the Board of Internal Improvements which was tasked with overseeing the ongoing internal improvements in the state. Following the dissolution of the Internal Improvement Board in 1841, he returned to private life until his death at age 50. Noble County Indiana, was named in his honor.
