Gerard Schultz, 72, of Elkton, Mich., former Miller County author and educator, died suddenly of an apparent heart attack Sunday, April 14, 1974, at the home of his son, Gerard Jr., in Mt. Prospect, Ill. He and Mrs. Schultz were spending the Easter weekend with their three sons and families in that area at the time of his unexpected death.
Mr. Schultz was the author of several recent books pertaining to the history of various areas of both Michigan and Iowa, and was the author of a "History of Miller County, Missouri," published in 1933 during his residence in Iberia.
He was a former teacher of history and German at Iberia Junior College during the years of 1926-1944. During his residence here, he served as general chairman of Miller County's centennial celebration in 1937, a pageant based on his history of the county.
Mr. Schultz was born Feb. 11, 1902, in Gasconade County. He received his bachelor's degree from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., and his master's from the University of Minnesota.
He was married to the former Jennie Brumley, who survives, on Aug. 22, 1923 at Iberia. They have lived in Michigan since 1955.
He had taught in Missouri and Iowa before becoming the first full time librarian at Huron County (Mich.) College. He retired as librarian of Laker High School, midway between Elkton and Pigeon, Mich., on July 1, 1967, but continued his historical writing.
He and Mrs. Schultz visited in Miller County last October with Mrs. Schultz's mother, Mrs. Aulta Brumley of Eldon, and other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife of the home, Mr. Schultz leaves three sons, John of Chicago, Gerard Jr., of Mt. Prospect, and Dan of Wheaton, Ill.; eight grandchildren; four sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. today (Thursday) at the United Methodist Church, Elkton. The body lay in state after 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Huron Memorial Chapel.
The Rev. O. William Cooper will officiate at the funeral services. John Schultz, a son, will read the Scripture, and the three sons and three friends will serve as pallbearers. Burial will be in Grand Lawn Cemetery there.
