She attended six months of schooling at Saint Benedict's Academy in Saint Joseph, MN; where she studied sewing among other things. Daughter, Alma, shared: "Josephine made her own wedding dress after returning home after her time at Saint Ben's. It was pearl gray with black beads and the wedding photograph shows that she did a very fine job. In later years, she proved to be an excellent seamstress who sewed many fine pieces of clothing for her daughters – she sewed coats, suits, and every kind of things. Her friends called her ‘Phina' or ‘Phinie'. She liked to play card and was a very good card player."
