Funeral Monday for Paul Harpenau

Paul N. Harpenau, 45, of rural Remsen died Thursday, Sept, 25, 1986, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital after a brief illness.

Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 29, at St. Mary's Catholic Church here. Rev. Dennis Sefick officiated. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery under direction of the Fisch Funeral Home.

Concelebrating the Mass with Father Sefick were Rev. Paul Eisele of Remsen, Rev. Leo Harpenau of Holstein, Msgr. Richard Sweeney of Sioux City, Rev. LeRoy Seuntjens of Emmetsburg, Rev. William Schreiber of Storm Lake, Rev. Robert Gralapp of Granville, Rev. Timothy Hogan of Oyens, and Rev. Richard Frank of Nicaragua.

Paul was born Dec. 1, 1940, at Le Mars, the son of Henry and Mildred (Nilles) Harpenau. He was reared and educated in the Remsen area and graduated from St. Mary's High School here in 1959.

His marriage to Mary Lou Vondrak took place Nov. 10, 1962, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Sioux City.

He farmed near Remsen and owned and operated the Bonanza Car Wash in Remsen. He had served in Co. A of the Army National Guard from April 13, 1959, to Jan. 2, 1963.

Mr. Harpenau was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus of Remsen.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou, of Remsen; three sons, Rick and Terrence, both at home, and Nicholas, with the U.S. Air Force, stationed at Little Rock, Ark.; one daughter, Kelly, at home; his mother, Mrs. Henry (Mildred) Harpenau of Remsen; three brothers, Clarence, James and Richard, all of Remsen; five sisters, Mrs. Denis (Rose Mary) Schilmoeller of Granville, Mrs. Ervin (JoAnn) Ahlers and Mrs. Larry (Ann) Galles, both of Remsen, and Miss Carol Jean Harpenau of Omaha, Nebr.

He was preceded in death by his father, Henry; and one sister, Jeanette, In infancy.

Casket bearers were Donald Delperdang, Gary and Thomas Harpenau, Donald Majeres, Steve Portz, and Pat Pridie.

Knights of Columbus honorary pallbearers were Richard Boever, Kenneth Goecke, Lloyd Harpenau, Wayne Pottebaum, Richard Roder and Gilbert Schroeder.
