Samuel Osborn Gulley was born in Scott Co., Virginia to James Pliant Gulley and Nancy Osborn. His known siblings were: Elizabeth Walker Gulley 1839–1920, she married Henry Ellington Addington; Lewis Francisco Gulley 1841–1935, he married Mary Jane Harris; James S Gulley 1842–1865, he was murdered by the Bill Sizemore gang; Abraham J Gulley 1844–1863, he died in the civil was; Winnie Gulley 1846–1862, died at age 16; Bryant G Gulley 1850–1929, served in the Civil war and migrated to Tulare Co., California; Alvis Albert Gulley 1850–1905,he migrated to Arkansas; Mary Polly Gulley 1851–1880; Clara J Gulley 1853; Silas Ratliff Gulley 1855–1926, he migrated to Tulare Co., California. Samuel Osburn Gulley was a soldier in Co. G 5 Tennessee Calvary, of the Confederate State Army. In an affidavid sworn and signed by L.E. Gulley in Dec. 1912, he vowed to the fact that S.O. Gulley was was in the killing and the scirmish with Bill Sizemore and his crowd when his brother, Jim Gulley, Jim Nute Gulley and several of his confederate soldier were murdered, on April 5, 1865 at The Ambush at Flora's Ferry.
Tennessee marriage records revealed that Samuel married twice. He married his first wife, Elizabeth White on 19 Sep 1861 in Jefferson Co., Tennessee and the second wife, Martha A White, on 7 Jun 1882 in Hamblen Co., Tennessee. from these unions he had at least 9 known children: Noah Patton Gulley 1862–1944, he married Melinda Jane
"Mohindia" Estes on 9 Dec 1886 in Hamblen Co., Tennessee; James C Gulley 1863– bef. 1920, he married Ernestine M Sampson on 23 July 1896 in Scott Co., Virginia;
Robert L Gulley 1866–, no records; Abraham J Gulley 1868–1943, never married. Winney B Gulley 1870–1877, she died at 7 years old; Martha Gulley 1871–,no records; Henry C Gulley 1873–1877 and Silas Gulley 1876–1877, both died as children; Mollie GULLEY 189–no records. Samuel had Dropsy at the time of his death, and his death cert. states that he died of Old Age.
