He served as the solicitor-general for the western district of the state of Georgia from 1834 to 1841, and as a judge of the same circuit, 1841 to 1845. From 1851 to 1857, he served as a Representative from Georgia in the United States House of Representatives. In 1857 President James Buchanan appointed him the solicitor of the United States Treasury in 1857. He resigned from the office on February 13, 1861 when Georgia succeeded from the union.
