The 1790 Federal Census of "Harvard Town" Worcester County, Ma. has the following in the household of
Merrit Burges, 1-0-3-0-0 (1 Free White Male Sixteen Years and Upward and 3 Free White Females.)

His father Ebenezer Burgess is listed on the line above him on the census with 2 Free White Males Sixteen Years and Upward and 3 Free White Females. See M637, Roll 4, page 274.

1 male age 10-15, 1 male age 20-30, 1 male age 60-70, a female age 60-70.

It appears that Ebenezer named this son after his cousin Marrett Monroe who was born 12-6-1713 in Lexington, Ma. Marrett Monroe is the son of John Monroe, who is son of the immigrant William Munroe and his first wife
Martha George. Ebenezer spent his childhood in Lexington as did his cousin Marrett.

"To the Hon. S. P. P. Fay Esq. Judge of Probate of Wills, This is to Request you to appoint William Shattuck 2nd
Admr on the Estate of my late husband Merrett Burgess deceased hereby dismissing that post myself.
Groton Sept 20th 1852
signed Miranda Burgess"

Court records further say...."The Memorial of William Shattuck 2nd of Groton in said County,
Respectfully represents
That Merrett Burgess who last dwelt in Groton in said County of Middlesex, within three months last died
intestate, possessed of goods and estate remaining to be administered, leaving a widow and ten children, four of
whom are minors, that the widow of said deceased has declined Admin. & has requested
That said Memorialist may be appointed Adm.
That the said Memorialist is ready to give Bond, with sufficient sureties, for the due performance of said
trust: Wherefore your Memorialist prays, that he may be appointed Administrator on the estate of said deceased,
in manner and form as the law in such case provides.

At a Court of Probate, holden at Lowell in and for said County, on the 21st day of September A.D. 1852....."
