William J Benn, a highly respected citizen of Amsterdam, died this morning, at 10:30 o'clock, at his home, No. 25 Academy street, of pneumonia, aged 62 years. Mr. Benn was taken ill one week ago Friday night and during the several days of his confinement continued to gradually sink until dissolution came at the above stated hour.
Mr. Benn was born at Hagaman August 18, 1847. being a son of Israel Benn and Jane Bishop. His entire life was passed as a resident of this vicinity. He came to Amsterdam in 1870 and entered the carpet manufacturing plant of S. Sanford & Sons in the capacity of clerk. By close attention to his duties and the faithful performance of the same he rose rapidly in his profession. Later he became connected with the Probity Mill company of Rockton, now the eighth ward, with Charles J. Becker, under the firm name of Benn & Becker. He returned to the employment of S. Sanford & Sons when he became superintendent of the plant. This high position he held until a few years ago. when he entered business for himself as a commission merchant, with an office in the Sanford Homestead building.
Mr. Benn was a member of the Board of Trade, the Green Hill cemetery association and the board of trustees of the Amsterdam hospital for a period of thirty years he was
superintendent of the Sunday School of the First M. E. Church. He was also a member of the official board and the music committee of the church.
In 1867 Mr. Benn was united in marriage to Katherine J. Fuller of Hagaman, who survives him. together with one son, Arthur E. Benn of this city. In addition he leaves two brothers Francis E. Benn of this city and Charles L. Benn of Hagaman.
