Francis J. O'Connor was born Francis J. Winterbank (aka known as Windebank) in Chicago, Illinois, to Thomas Winterbank and Katherine Mary (Murphy) Winterbank. He was the oldest of 5 children. His mother, Kate, died in childbirth having the 5th child. Their father tried to raise the children alone, but was unable to do so. The boys lived at the Maryville Academy ( a Catholic orphanage) in Joliet, Illinois from Febuary to December of 1914. Then the 3 boys: Francis, Thomas and Michael, went to live with their mother's sister and her husband, William and Bess (Murphy) O'Connor, and they were raised by them, on a farm outside Mallard, Iowa. The boys eventually took the last name of O'Connor. Their sisters, Katherine and Helen, were raised by another of their mother's sisters and her husband, Daniel and Nell (Murphy) Kissane, in Chicago.

ESTHERVILLE- Services for Francis Joseph O'Connor, 84, Estherville, will be held Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Father Albert O. Grendler officiating. Internment will be in St. Peter and Paul Cemetery, West Bend. He died Sunday, June 22, 1986 at the Good Samaritan Center, Estherville.
Friends may call at the Henry-Olson-Furhman Funeral Home after 3 p.m. Tuesday. Legion of Mary Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. and Parish Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
He was born Feb. 10, 1902 at Oak Park, Ill., the son of Thomas and Katherine ( Murphy) O'Connor. He attended Chicago schools. On Feb., 7, 1927 he was united in marriage with Emma Hartman at West Bend. They lived and farmed in the Rodman area until to moving to Estherville in 1950 where he worked at the Gardston Hotel and V.C. Fertilizer Plant until his retirement in 1965. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1921.
He is survived by his wife, Emma, Estherville; one son, John O'Connor, New Brighton, Minn.; four daughters; Mrs. Henry (Helen) Bragdon, Silver Springs, Md.; Mrs.Glenn (Mary Ann) Strom, Estherville; Mrs. Eugene (Margaret) Ferrel, Paducah, Ky.; and Mrs. William (Shirley) Fisher, Lake Benton, Minn.; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, four grandchildren; parents, two brothers and two sister.

note- His parents never went by O'Connor. His dad was a Winterbank and Francis and his brothers took the last name of their aunt and uncle after being taken in by them after the death of their mother, Katherine "Kate".
