Rufus Riley Goodell was born in Monson, Maine on December 28, 1843 to Joseph Goodell and Cynthia Hitchcock. He was raised on a farm, and as a youngster he emigrated to Minnesota where he continued in farming. In the fall of 1862, with the Civil War under way, Goodell enlisted as a private in Company G, 8th Minnesota Infantry and served for three years and 13 days in the Union Army. His first service time was principally on the Western Frontier, but in the fall of 1864, Private Goodell went South with his regiment being actively engaged in Tennessee, North and South Carolina. After his Civil War service, Goodell traveled to the Lake Superior copper district and engaged in exploring for minerals. While living in Houghton, MI in 1868, he was married to Katharine Melissa Easton, a Houghton school teacher, and the couple raised five children (Robert Wood, Rufus Talmadge, Horatio Stuart, Katherine Abbie "Kate" and Marquerite Mary "Daisy M").
In 1869, Rufus Goodell was appointed agent for the St. Mary's Canal Mineral Land Co. in Houghton. It was estimated that at one time, he owned about 127,000 acres of agricultural and mineral land and did well with his investments. The Goodell family in later years invested in the oil distribution business which did very good through the growth of the American automobile industry locally. The couple moved to Pasadena and following the death of his wife in 1925, Rufus lived with his daughter Katherine Abbie.
Rufus Riley died at the age of 89 years.
