A terrible accident occurred about two miles south east of town Monday
afternoon. Mr. Hiram VanVlack and wife started for Viroqua with a team
of three year old colts. They had proceeded but a short distance when
the colts became frightened and ran away, throwing Mr. VanVlack
against a maple tree, fracturing his skull and breaking his left arm
in two places. Mrs. VanVlack's collar bone was broken and she was
badly bruised up. A messenger was dispatched at once for Dr. Chase.
Mr. VanVlack breathed his last just after the Doctor's arrival. Mrs.
VanVlack's injuries are serious, but not necessarily fatal.
Mr. VanVlack had lived in this county for thirty-two years and was
highly respected. His remains will be buried today at Liberty Pole.
Vernon County Censor June 18, 1884 p.3
On Monday Mr. and Mrs. Hiram VanBlack, living in the eastern part of
the town of Viroqua started to come into the city when near the
residence of Michael Welch, the team became frightened and were soon
unmanageable. Mr. VanBlack was soon after thrown out, striking his
head against a tree with such force as to cause death within an hour.
Although severely injured, it is thought the lady may recover. She is
a sister of Samuel Henry of this city. The sad occurrence has cast a
gloom over the entire community.
