Sue Lloyd
Birth: Aug. 7, 1939
Suffolk, England
Death: Oct. 20, 2011, England

Actress. The daughter of a general practitioner, she was raised in Birmingham. Her initial ambitions were to become a professional dancer after seeing a performance of Margot Fonteyn, and at the age of eleven, she began training at Sadler's Wells School of Ballet from where she received a scholarship. She grew to the height of 5 feet, 8 inches and with it believed this would impede her progress as a dancer. After a stint as a chorus girl with Lionel Blair, she gravitated to modeling and adorned the cover of Vogue Magazine, while studying acting. She marked her TV debut in the British series "The Sentimental Agent" (1963) and followed this with guest roles in the popular programs "The Avengers" and "The Saint". Lloyd found an international audience with her motion picture debut in the first installment of the Harry Palmer spy series "The Ipcress File" (1965), which starred Michael Caine. In 1971, she starred in a stage adaptation of the TV series "The Avengers". Further film credits include "Where's Jack?" (1969), "Lola" (1970), "Revenge of the Pink Panther" (1978), and the role of Vanessa Grant in the movie adaptations of Jackie Collins' novels "The Stud" (1978) and "The Bitch" (1979), which starred Joan Collins. Lloyd may perhaps be best remembered for her work in the British TV series "The Baron" (1966 to 1967) and as Barbara Hunter in "Crossroads" (1975 to 1985), the latter which starred her future husband Ronald Allen, whom she married in 1991, but he would succumb from lung cancer a short time after. She never fully recovered from his death. At that point on, she sporadically appeared on TV, in such programs as "Keeping Up Appearances", but focused more of her time towards painting. She died following a lengthy illness. (bio by: C.S.)
