US Congressman. Known as W. Benjamin Gibbs, he graduated from the Atlanta Law School in 1911, afterwards beginning a practice in Folkston, Georgia. In 1912 he moved to Jesup, Georgia, where he reestablished his law practice and also owned and operated a farm. From 1913 to 1924 he was Jesup's City Solicitor. In 1924 and 1925 Gibbs served on the staff of Governor Clifford Walker with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. From 1925 to 1939 he was Solicitor General of the Brunswick Judicial Circuit, and from 1922 to 1938 he served as Wayne County Attorney. From 1931 to 1937 Gibbs was a member of Georgia's Board of Control of Eleemosynary Institutions, which oversaw the state's charitable institutions. In 1938 he was the successful Democratic nominee for a seat in the US House of Representatives, and he served part of one term, January, 1939 until his death. He was succeeded in Congress by his wife Florence Reville Gibbs, who won the special election to serve out the remainder of his term. (bio by: PL)
