Robert married Beulah Samples in Benton, Saline County, Ark., on April 10, 1916,. According to the 1910 Census, Beaulah was born in Louisiana in 1894 to D.P. and Fannie Samples - her parents born in Ark/Ala respectively. Her father was listed as a farmer.

The 1917-1918 WWI Draft Registration for Robert lists his address (along with a wife and child) as being Rt #2 in Lebanon (Marion Co.) Kentucky. However, he is filling out the draft registration in Benton, Ark. This is a bit confusing, unless Robert has moved his family to Kentucky but hasn't yet ended employment in Benton, Ark., where he lists his occupation as a sprinkler fitter for Automatic Sprinker Co., and says he works all over the United States.

By 1920, Robert is residing full time with Beulah and his children in the community of St. Mary in Marion County, Kentucky where Robert is engaged in farming. Besides Robert and Beaulah, the 1920 census lists two children. Robert Jr. and Mary, the oldest being two and a half years old, both being born in Kentucky. With this knowledge, the couple must have moved back to Kentucky at least by 1917-1918. Robert Lee and Beulah had at least five children: Robert Lee Jr, Mary, Charles Owen, Walter, and Martha. Although most, if not all, of his children were born in Marion County, Ky., where Robert was from, Beulah dies in Arkansas on March 26, 1926, leaving Robert with 5 small children.

Robert Graves' mother died less than two years later. Her obituary said she died of infirmaties of old age and had been in declining health for some time. Robert's father was also over the age of 70 and would suffter a stroke two years after the death of Beulah, leaving him at least partially paralyzed. In addition, Robert's oldest brother had moved to California; his brother Tyler had died in 1908; his brother Ernest was married and living in Campbellsville with two children of his own. Robert's twin sister, Josie was married and living in New York. There was not much family help available to Robert and the children.

At this point, the timing of life events is hard to pinpoint. It is not known exactly how long the children remained with Robert and what his job situation was, but by the beginning of the Depression in 1929, the children are placed in an orphanage in Toledo, Ohio, and Robert has moved to the same city, living in bording houses. According to family, two of Robert's sons, Walter and Charles, eventually go to work on the farm of Robert's brother, Alva Smith Graves, in Marion County, KY. One daughter, Mary, is eventually taken to New Jersey to live with Robert's twin sister, Josie Graves Williams. We find Robert Lee Jr. living just outside Toledo in Maumee, Ohio. It is there that he registers for the draft in WWII, and where he marries in 1944. He and his wife ultimately move to California. Youngest daughter, Martha, goes to live with her maternal grandparents in Arkansas.

Based on the 1940 Census, which also asks where persons were living in April of 1935, we know Robert was still in Toledo at this time. But by 1940, the census lists Robert as a "lodger" in a Cincinnati hotel (one of about 40 men living there). They are all unemployed. Robert is listed as being a pipe fitter seeking work in the plumbing business. At this time he has been unemployed for 64 weeks.

In 1942, he registers for the "Old Man's" WWII draft in Cincinnati, Ohio at age 53, which is the last information we have for him. He lists a mailing address as a Post Office General Delivery in Evanston area of Cincinnati. He also says he stays "sometimes" at 212 Post Square, Davis Hotel in Cincinnati. He lists his employment for Mrs. Wallace at Peggy's Tea Room. His contact information is not a family member, but a former employer, Lucille Ryan.

Information handed down to descendants was that he was buried in a pauper's grave. It was previously thought that he was buried in Spring Grove Cemetery, but we now know this is a different Robert Lee Graves.

It is interesting to note that even though Josie and Robert Lee Graves are twins, her birth date is listed as September 26, 1888, Robert always lists his birth date as September 26, 1889. It is thought that 1888 is the correct year.
