China Relief Expedition (Boxer Rebellion) Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He was serving as a Hospital Apprentice in the United States Navy. His citation reads: For distinguished conduct in the presence of the enemy in volunteering and carrying messages under fire at Peking, China, 12 July 1900. He was awarded the Medal July 19, 1901.
