Born in Glasgow, Baron County, Kentucky, he received his early education at Glasgow, and afterwards attended Bacon College, Kentucky, graduating as a civil engineer at the age of twenty-one. He then taught school five years and in the meantime read law with Judge Christopher Tompkins, of Glasgow, Kentucky. In the spring of 1846, he came to Rushville, and practiced law there. Politically, he was a republican, and was since the organization of the party.
