John Hook Jameson was the 5th child of ten born to David Jameson and Susanna Hook from Pennsylvania and he was born in Hookstown, Beaver, PA, He married Mary Helen Traster in 1848, in Millersburg, Holmes, OH. John and Mary lived in Hookstown after their marriage. In the early 1850's, they moved to Winchester, Van Buren, IA, along with other members of his family. Together they had ten children which consisted of 4 daughters and six sons. In the spring of 1862, John volunteered and served in the Union Army during the Civil War. John was assigned to Company I and on September 4, 1862 the 19th Iowa Infantry Regiment of 908 men was sent into service. After the service he returned and was a long time member of the G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic). He is also listed on the "Kansas Pioneers List" where he farmed and was well known forhis carpentry skill as well as boat building.
