Gordon was 3rd child of Henry Leroy Hanes and Susan Ann Thibedeau. Gordon was severely burned in flat fire that took the lives of his two older brothers in December 1923. Gordon served in US Army during World War II. He died of tuberculosis, which he contracted overseas during the war.
