| Birth: | Nov. 13, 1837 Houlton Aroostook County Maine, USA | | Death: | Nov. 18, 1912 |  Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He was serving as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 73rd U.S. Colored Troops at Fort Blakely, Alabama, on April 9, 1865, when he earned his Medal. His citation reads: Volunteered to attack the enemy's works in advance of orders and, upon permission being given, made a most gallant assault. He was awarded his Medal on June 28, 1894. Later he served in numerous expeditions against the Indians. He also served in the defense of US citizens on both sides of the Rio Grande during revolutionary uprisings in the years 1873 to 1876. From 1900 to 1901 he commanded the Department of the Colorado. He also was the inventor of the Merriman Infantry Pack. He later rose to the rank of Major General.
