Obituary - "The Leader" - Wednesday, October 19, 2011
ADDISON, NY | Oakley H. Hayes, Sr., age 84, founder of the Addison Post, Inc., went to be with his Lord and Savior peacefully on Saturday, October 15, 2011. He was surrounded by his loving family who walked him home.

He was born on July 18, 1927 in Painted Post, New York, to the late Valentine and Florence (Cady) Hayes. He was a 1945 graduate of Westfield High School. Oakley proudly served in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Germany. On September 7, 1948, he married his wife, Mary Jane Lee in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania.

In 1967, Oakley established his dream of operating a local hometown paper, The Addison Post, Inc. In 1970 he relocated his family to reside in Addison. The Addison Post is still in operation today and is managed by his loving son, Oakley, Jr.

Oakley was a member of the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church in Addison, where he served as an Elder. He was a member of the Addison Kiwanis Club. He founded the Addison Art Club. He served on the board of Child Evangelism Fellowship. He was a member of the Williams-Greengrass American Legion in Addison. He was an avid musician. He enjoyed playing the guitar and singing. He had a televised musical ministry entitled, the "Tex and Slim" show. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, flying his model airplanes, and he loved to paint. He touched the lives of many people. He devoted his life to his family and Savior, Jesus Christ. He will most be remembered for his zest for life. He had a kind heart, generous to those in need, and he loved people.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years: Mary Jane of Addison, NY; three beloved children and their spouses: Dawn (Gene) Austin of Horseheads, NY, Oakley (Jewell) Hayes, Jr. of Addison, NY, Debbie (Kirk) Beaver of Addison, NY; brother and sister-in-law: Floridan (Arletta) Hayes of Westfield, PA; five grandchildren: Jed (Jun) Diffenderfer of California, Joseph Hayes of Addsion, Amanda (Daniel) Knaisch of Addison, NY, Jeremy (Joel) Hayes of Hawaii, Matthew (Allison) Beaver of Addison; four great-grandchildren: Abbie, Brent, Johnny, and Jaica; step-family: Jeff, Ursula, Allison, Melissa, Randy, Julie and Amanda. He is further survived by nieces, nephew, other relatives, and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Burdell Edwards.

Relatives and friends may call on Thursday, October 20, 2011 from 1-3 and 7-9 PM at Carpenter-Flint Funeral Home, 10 Wall Street in Addison, NY, where funeral services will be conducted on Friday, October 21 at 11:00am. Pastor Scott Towner will officiate. A graveside service will be held at the Addison Rural Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made for an Oakley Hayes, Sr. Scholarship Fund for an upcoming graduate majoring in journalism or art. Contributions to the scholarship fund may be mailed c/o Addison Post, 42 Main Street, Addison, NY, 14801. Anyone wishing may offer condolences at
