Journalist. Born in Sparta, Tennessee, he moved with his family to Ohio when he was 8. After studying law at Lebanon, Ohio, he passed the bar and moved to South Bend, Indiana, where he became a newspaper publisher and represented St. Joseph County in the Indiana legislature. He moved to Indianapolis in 1845 and developed the "Indianapolis Journal" into a leading morning daily. At the height of his political career, President Abraham Lincoln appointed him government printer and, after leaving that office, he was reappointed by President Rutherford B. Hayes. As a publisher, he became the first in Indiana to use a caloric press machine, metallic stretching machine for binding, and a Bullock printing press. He was also the first to use an Edison light in a workplace.
