US Senator. He was admitted to the Nevada bar in 1935 and commenced the practice of law in Reno, Nevada. Appointed as the district attorney of Storey County, he served in that office from 1935 until 1938, when he was appointed deputy attorney general of Nevada in 1938. Four years later he became the Nevada State attorney. serving from 1942 to 1950. He was elected as a Democrat Senator from Nevada to the United States Senate, serving from 1954 until his resignation December 17, 1974. During his tenure in Congress he served as the Chairman of the Committee on District of Columbia, on the Joint Committee on Washington Metropolitan Problems, and on the Select Committee on Small Business.
