Born Manning Alexander Logan in Carbondale, Illinois, he served as a Major in the 33rd Volunteer Infantry, US Army. In actions at San Jacinto, Philippine Islands, November 11, 1899, Major Logan was killed while leading his battalion against heavy armed entrenchments of the enemy. For most distinguished gallantry, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on May 3, 1902.
