Dr. Abeln was born in New Vienna in 1878. He was educated in New Vienna and continued his education in Dubuque, finishing his medical training in St. Louis. Dr. Abeln practiced medicine in New Vienna for 36 years before moving to Dubuque and practicing another 14 years rounding out 50 years of medical service. He died in Dubuque in 1936.
He married Anna Luthmers in 1904 and they were the parents of three children. Dr. Abeln was the brother of Frank G. Abeln of New Vienna who ran a service station and also served as an undertaker for a time.
Their father was Herman Abeln who was one of the earliest settlers, self-employed as a cooper.
