OBITUARY: The Register-Herald, Beckley WV, 25 Feb 2011 (Friday)
White Sulphur Springs — Edith Marie Harper Speiden, 97, of Rowan Road, White Sulphur Springs, passed away Tuesday night, February 22, 2011, at her residence. Born at home on July 22, 1913, in Crowville, La., she was the youngest child of the late Otis Hines Harper Jr. and Onie Evelyn May Harper. Mrs. Speiden was a member of First Baptist Church in Fairlea. She was a devoted homemaker, mother, and grandmother. She moved to White Sulphur Springs in 1993 and lived with her daughter. She has previously lived in Alexandria, La., Silver Spring, Md., Bloomfield, N.J., Princeton, N.J., and in Beckley. Preceding her in death, other than her parents, were her husband, Edgar Speiden III; brothers, William Hines Harper, Quillie Mayfield Harper, Noel Barwick Harper, and one sister, Penny Elaine Harper. She was the youngest surviving member of her family.

Survivors include two daughters, Lois M. Speiden of White Sulphur Springs, and Norma Elaine Speiden Evans of Monroe Township, N.J.; six grandchildren, Deborah Ruth Evans Day, Lois Elizabeth Evans West, William Joseph Evans II, David Edgar Evans, Paul Norman Evans, and Daniel Jonce Evans; 10 great-grandchildren, Michael James Day, Jonathan Colin Day, Ryan Zachary Thomas Day, Katherine Marie Elizabeth Day, William Joseph Evans III, Zechariah Enoch Evans, Chloe Marie Evans, Evelyn Anne Russo, Charles Allan Evans, Lauren Olivia Evans. She is also survived by a nephew, Quillie Mayfield Harper Jr., and a niece, Sue Ann Harper Pennino, and numerous grand and great-grandnieces and nephews. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, February 26, 2011, at the First Baptist Church in Fairlea, with Pastor Glen Tallent and Pastor Kevin Prevett officiating. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at a later date at the Whiting Memorial Park in Whiting, N.J. Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, is serving the family.
