Immigrated to the United States in 1843, settled in Illinois and received a thorough business education. Moved to California in 1849 and engaged in gold mining until 1860, when he moved to Virginia City, Nevada. There he went into partnership with associates in a lucrative gold and silver mining company. They also had a real estate business in San Francisco with investments in various manufactures on the Pacific coast. He was elected as a Nevada State Democrat to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1881 to March 3, 1887. After a unsuccessful reelection in 1886, he resumed his business interests in San Francisco where he remained till his death.
