RICHARD FRANCIS SCHMITT was born on December 20, 1909 in rural Harvey, North Dakota to Mathias & Margaret (nee Weber) Schmitt. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school through the eighth grade. In 1934 he moved to the Bellechester area and worked as a farm hand for several farmers. He attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis and graduated from the Auto Mechanics program. He moved to Mazeppa and started working at Almeter Motors.

On November 13, 1940 he married Bertha C. Marx in Mazeppa. They made their home in Mazeppa and in 1944 Richard started his own repair shop, Schmitt's Garage. After World War II his brother Gilbert joined him in the business and they renamed the business Schmitt's Garage and Implement and together ran it until February of 1975, when they sold the business and retired. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, playing cards, gardening and doing volunteer work. He delivered Meals on Wheels for twenty-seven years, served on the Mazeppa School Board for many years and held various council positions at his church. He was a charter member of the Mazeppa Lions Club and a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters of Harvey, ND, the Mazeppa Senior Citizens Club, Knights of Columbus Council #2751 and a retired member of the Mazeppa Volunteer Department.

Richard is survived by his wife, Bertha, four daughters, ... , three sons, ..., seventeen grandchildren ..., two great grandchildren, and one brother, .... He was preceded in death by three sisters, Martha Heber, Verona Froeber, & Lucy Bunce, and four brothers, Joseph, Matt, Vincent and Gilbert.
