Pvt. Miller, 18th Co., 20th Engineers, sailed from New York City aboard the troopship "Tuscania" on 24 January 1918. He was put ashore in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, due to illness. He thereby escaped the torpedoing & sinking of the "Tuscania" on 5 February 1918 in the North Channel between Scotland & Ireland by German submarine UB-77.

Pvt. Miller then sailed to war aboard the "New York" on 12 March 1918 from New York City. He returned from World War I aboard the "Santa Paula" in May 1919. On all voyages, he listed his mother, Mrs. Emma Miller, of Anselmo, Nebraska, as his next-of-kin.
