She was the first training nurse in the United States. She learned some medical knowledge from her family doctor early in her childhood. In 1870 she started her nursing training under the direction of Doctor Susan Dimock, the resident physician, being the first trained nurse to graduate from the nursing program. She created the first system for charting and maintaining individual medical records for each patient. She studied in England, meeting Florence Nightingale. She lived in Japan for 5 years, establishing the first Japanese nursing program. She established nurse-training programs in various parts of the country. She was inducted into the national Women's Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, New York. (bio by: Mike)
