Charles Nodier
Birth: Apr. 29, 1780
Death: Jan. 7, 1844

Writer. Born in Besançon, France, he was noted for the influence he had on the French Romantics and who introduced a younger generation to the conte fantastique, gothic literature movement of era with his writings. In 1824, he settled in Paris after appointment as director of the Arsenal Library and soon became one of the leaders of the literary life in that city. He did much to encourage the French Romantics with his fantastic, masterfully written short stories. His election to the Académie Française in 1833, virtually constituted official recognition as a respectable literary, opening up a new literary territory for later generations. He died at age 63 in Paris, France. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
