Jacob Smith was the son of Elizabeth Heim Smith and either Johann Nicholas or Adam Smith. His father died when he was 7 years old.

In the 1840 Census report, Jacob Smith was listed as living in Toboyne Township, Perry County, PA. Occupation was listed as merchandise and trade. Household consisted of 1 male 20 to 30, 1 female under 5, 1 female 20 to 30. 1 over 20 could not read or write.

From U.S. census report of 1850, Jacob was a weaver and lived in Madison Township, Perry County, PA. He lived on the north side of Sherman's Creek, east of where Anderson Run flowed into Sherman's Creek., not too far from the Green Grove School. His property value was listed at $75. His age 34. His wife Sarah A. age 29, and John W. age 7 and Samuel A. age 6 were listed with him. His wife and sons were listed as having been born in Perry County, PA. His place of birth was not listed.

In the 1860 census, Jacob Smith was listed as living in Madison Township, Perry County, PA, age 47. He was listed as a weaver with real estate valued at $300 and personal property at $250. His wife Sarah was 39 and could not read or write. Attending school were John W. Smith, 18, and Samuel A. Smith, 16. Also listed with Catharine, age 3. All persons were listed as having been born in Pennsylvania.

1880 census has Jacob and Sarah living in Jackson Twp., Perry Co. Both were listed as having both parents born in Pennsylvania. Occupaton was listed as farmer.

From book at Perry Historians entitled Descendants of Johann George Heim by Charled and Mabel Eater:

The five younger children of Adam and Elizabeth Smith had a much easier life than Daniel and Peter Smith, the first 2 sons. After Elizabeth married Jacob Rowe, a well to do farmer, they lived in relative luxury. Jacob's first wife, Anna (Seager) Rowe died in 1828. He then married Elizabeth (Heim) Smith. They had 2 sons.
