| Birth: | Jul. 26, 1908 | | Death: | Sep. 11, 1973 |  Chilean President. Allende Gossens was born on July 26, 1908, in Valparaiso, Chile. At first a doctor by profession, he later entered politics, and founded Chile's Socialist Party, served as a Cabinet Minister, and Chairman of the Chilean Senate. In 1952, 1958, and 1964, Allende Gossens ran for President of Chile as a socialist, but lost all 3 times. In 1970 he ran as President of Chile again as a socialist and won with 36.3 percent of the vote. On September 11, 1973, as high inflation threatened Chile, troops stormed his palace during a coup to overthrow him. As the troops entered the palace of Allende Gossens,in Santiago, Chile, he either committed suicide or was killed by bullets fired from there guns. After his death he was replaced as President of Chile by General Augusto Pinochet.
