CARLSBAD--A funeral mass for Juan E. Acosta, Sr. 83, of West Monterrey Street will be 9 a.m. Tuesday at San Jose Catholic Church with the Rev. Maurice Hauer officiating. Interment will follow at Santa Catarina Cemetery.

A vigil will be 7 p.m. Monday at San Jose Catholic Church.

Mr. Acosta died Friday, Aug. 6, 1999, at his home.

Denton-Funchess Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Juan E. Acosta Sr. was born June 12, 1916, in Balmorhea, Texas, to Perfecto and Delores Acosta. He moved from Ft. Davis, Texas, in 1929, to Harroun Farms where he worked until 1943. At that time, he went to work for U.S. Potash.

He moved to Carlsbad in 1944 and went to work for IMCC where he remained until 1962. He later began working construction in Carlsbad, Roswell and with Kennecott Copper in Hurley. He retired in 1981.

Mr. Acosta had been married to Elisa Baiza Acosta since 1940 and was a member of San Jose Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Natalie Trujillo and Refugia Granger; two brothers, Roberto Acosta and Perfecto Acosta, and a granddaughter, Terry Lara.

Survivors include his wife, Elisa Acosta of Carlsbad; four sons, Juan Jr., Daniel and Jose of Carlsbad, and Adan Acosta of Las Cruces; three daughters, Delia Martinez, Eva Morales and Olivia Lara of Carlsbad; three sisters, Margarita Lopez of Malaga and Irene Campos and Rosa Granger of Carlsbad; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be John Michael Acosta, Chris Morales, Enrico Morales, Larry Lara, Rudy Martinez and Danette Acosta. Honorary pallbearers will be grandchildren.
