Funeral services for Mr. Fred James Ponder, 76, of Henderson, will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Mt. Olive, Mississippi with Rev. Jeff Easterland officiating. Interment will follow in Cooley Springs Cemetery under the direction of Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Mt. Olive.

A visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

The family received friends at Crawford-A. Crim Funeral Home in Henderson on Monday, October 10, 2011 from 6-8 p.m..

Mr. Ponder passed away October 9, 2011 in Tyler. He was born December 13, 1934 in Mt. Olive, Miss. to the late Arthur and Janie Rutland Ponder. Mr. Ponder served his country in the U.S. Air Force, and upon leaving the service, he went to work for GTE in Sherman in 1957. In 1974 he was transferred to Henderson and later retired here after 40 years with GTE. He also owned and operated Ponder Tree Service. Mr. Ponder was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Henderson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: brothers, Cecil and Robert Ponder; and sisters, Elise Ponder, Mary Doris Ponder, and Alene Ponder Batte.

Survivors include: wife of 54 years, Barbara Ponder of Henderson; sons, Lynn Ponder and wife Gayle of College Station, and Steve Ponder and wife Betty of Minden; daughter, Debbie Padgett and longtime partner Ronald Jack Glenn of Henderson; sisters, Irene Napier of Mt. Olive, Miss. and Ruth Hollingsworth of Hattiesburg, Miss; grandchildren, Lauren Ponder and Jeremy Ponder of College Station, Whitney Ponder of Dallas, Chase Ponder of Minden, and Chris Padgett and fiance Chelsie Wallace of Henderson; great-grandchild, Brenli Padgett; and several nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Pallbearers will be Chris Padgett, Chase Ponder, Gary Hollingsworth, Burt Ponder, Ronald Jack Glenn, and Jeffrey Hollingsworth. Honorary pallbearers will be Joey Cross, Ronnie Hollingsworth, Louis Lee, and Nicholas Hollingsworth.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of East Texas Foundation at 4111 University Blvd, Tyler, TX 75701.
